A BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC FIREPLACE MANTEL ~ the hearth and firebox

We got so lucky finding this great fireplace mantel at the Restore near us.

We are building a faux fireplace in our master bedroom and the beautiful mantel will be the cherry on top!

THE HEARTH

We built the hearth with 2x4s and a piece of plywood for the top. I wanted the hearth to be slightly bigger than the fireplace mantel so I can have a place for some decor. The hearth ended up being 24×77.

We attached the four sides and the four cross members with pocket screws made with a Kreg jig.

Then we attached a piece of 3/4″ plywood to the top for the fireplace to sit on.

We also used the jig to make pocket holes along the front to attach the hearth to the subflooring.

We then removed the carpet and the baseboard where the fireplace will stand so the hearth will be flush against the wall.

We centered the box between the two windows and screwed the hearth into the floor.

THE FIREBOX

Our next job was to build the firebox.

We used three 1x10s for the facing. Two vertical side pieces connected together by the third cross piece, again using pocket screws to attach all the pieces.

Then we used two more 1x10s to make the sides of the firebox.

We used a leftover piece of melamine for the back of the firebox.

And here is the almost finished product.

Next we’re covering the facing, the firebox and the hearth with this beautiful stone paneling.

Isn’t it pretty??!!

Please come back to see how it turns out.

Have a great Tuesday!

Love y’all,

Linda
