A NEW OLD FARMHOUSE TABLE

When Son #1 moved into his own place, we were grateful that he took some of our extra furniture that we have stored in our garage. We are proud to say we can almost park a car in there….NOT!

One piece of furniture that he took was an old coffee table that we bought on Craigslist a hundred years ago.

Son #1’s sweet girlfriend Miss B wanted to change the look to more of a farmhouse feel. She shared her ideas of what she wanted and the LOML and I got started on making her vision a reality.

They came over with the coffee table one Sunday and we got to work.

First, she wanted the legs to be lighter so she and Son #1 painted the green legs with the same antique white milk paint that I used on my master bedroom furniture. There was a total of 4 coats. I distressed it a little bit and polyurethaned it with four coats.

The next thing they wanted to change was the top of the table. Miss B wanted the plank look like this inspiration picture.

Son #1 and the LOML got out the trusty table saw and started cutting 1 inch pine boards that we had left over from earlier projects and just sitting in our garage. They first cut the boards into 3 inch wide “planks” and then to a length to allow for a 1½ inch overhang on all sides of the existing top.

After the guys cut all the “planks”, they glued each piece onto the existing top then pre-drilled countersink holes and screwed the outer perimeter planks using #8 1¼” wood screws.

I filled in the counterscrew holes with Minwax stainable wood putty and sanded until smooth.

Son #1 came over during the week and wood conditioned then stained the top a light golden oak from Minwax.

**In hindsight, we read that we should have conditioned the wood before the wood putty to prevent the oils from penetrating the wood around the screw holes and staining a little different color.**

The color is beautiful!

I applied four coats of Minwax Polycrylic and the table is finished and beautiful!

And a little before & after

And speaking of beautiful……… these two beautiful people are the new owners of a pretty cool farmhouse coffee table.

Love them both!! (the people and the coffee table!)

Happy Saturday Everybody!
