THE READING NOOK ~ The bookcases

I’m so excited to be working on our cozy reading nook in our master bedroom.

So far, we’ve built the bench. You can read all about it here. I found the black cubicle at IKEA in the damaged section in the front of the store. Fifteen dollars is quite a deal!!

Next we built two bases to fill the space on each side of the bench.
First we built frames with 2x4s and then used edge glued panels, 1×24 for the wide base on the left and 1×20 for the narrower base on the right, as the face and top of the base. Just in case you’re wondering why they are not the same width and why we didn’t center the bench in the space is because the electrician had to place the lights next to a stud so he placed the lights where he had to then we centered the bench under the lights. Does that make sense?

We built two small bookcases to place on top of these side bases.

For the wider bookcase we used 1×12 pine boards for the sides and two shelves. We used the same pocket joints to connect the bookcase to the wall and the shelves to the bookcases as we did for the bench.

For the narrower bookcase we used 1×10 pine boards for the sides and three shelves.

I then primed the whole thing with two coats of Kilz 2 and painted with three coats of Sherwin Williams Promar 200 extra white semi-gloss paint.

It’s coming along so well and I’m loving how it’s looking!!

Next step in the project is the wood plank wall. Come back and see how it looks. You’re gonna love it!!

Love y’all,

Linda
